The Science of Tides

Meeting 1

In our first meeting we will explore the science that underlies tides we experience at the seashore. We will start by learning why we have two tides a day, how the moon and sun conspire to produce a variety of tidal behaviors around the world, why some places on Earth experience huge (50 feet) tides and others almost no tides, why we have “spring” and “neap” tides and how tidal action has geologically impacted the Earth and is gradually sending the moon farther away from the Earth. We will discover ocean gyres that are driven by the interaction of tidal forces, currents they produce and the shape of ocean basins. We will also look at the impact ocean tides have had on life, looking at its role in enabling land-dwelling animals, and the interplay of life today and tidal actions.

By way of preparation I suggest you view this short video, which explains the basis for two main tides we experience each day. In addition I offer this time-lapse video which shows the amazing tidal action at the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia.
